If the seal ain't broke, then nothing was stolen...
There is a new trend in thievery in Africa. Thieves cut the whole door from the container, relieve the container of it’s content, then they weld the door back on the container.
What does it mean for the consumer in the end? Since thieves remove the whole door to access the content of the container, they don’t touch the seal at all. And even worse, since the seal is intact when the customer get the delivery, insurance companies refuse to acknowledge that the container was pilfered. That is for people with the basic insurance protection.
While companies like Hapag-Lloyd are fighting this issue by reinforcing containers, we suggest to customers going to Africa to take adequate insurance protection.
Also, these reinforced container have a smaller opening than regular ones. So cars that fit into a regular container may be unable to enter a reinforced container.
